Whimsical and Undulating Green Roof Tops Adventure Centre

This RIBA Award winning activity building at Kilburn Grange Park Adventure Playground is a whimsical timber structure designed by Erect Architecture to resemble a large piece of play ground furniture.

Its imaginative design has produced a visually, physically and educationally stimulating series of play structures both inside and out, characterised by the extensive use of reclaimed and recycled materials.

Overall the design is developed as a conventional sequence of ‘outdoor rooms’, with varying degrees of enclosure. The activity building is the lynchpin around which everything else flows. Its distinctive tree-like roof stretches out into the outside play areas.

The undulating biodiversity roof is created by Bauder and bedded with small plug plants which will grow to cover the roof giving a different focus throughout the year according to the different times at which they flower.  The entire roof system was installed by Accurate Roofing.

The scheme provides a year-round haven where children can spend time together especially between the end of school and the return of their working parents.  Local children were involved in the design process, in part to generate a sense of ownership. Intensive workshops both in the school and on site developed key ideas about the nature of play.
