Bauder Green Roof Wins Norfolk Association of Architects Award

A Bauder green roof bus shelter has been recognised by The Norfolk Association of Architects (NAA), the county’s branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), winning the Design & Craftsmanship Award.

The University of East Anglia’s bus shelter located on University Drive in Norwich, which opened in November last year, is part of a scheme ran by the Norfolk County Council and the University of East Anglia to improve the image, effectiveness and use of public transport on campuses.

LSI Architects designed the low-carbon project, based on a simple cantilevered steel structure arranged around a central spine, the shelter was then constructed by MJS Projects using, where suitable, low-carbon and sustainable materials. Green roofing specialist contractors GRM roofing then completed the structure by installing the bus shelter's green roof. 

In the same way, a key component of the bus shelter is its Bauder high quality green roof sedum blanket which promotes biodiversity and provides an aesthetical roof to the shelter. The exciting and original design of the shelter and its roof, with the angles of the green roof changing along the length of the bus stop, creates a striking folded effect in an attempt to challenge the UEA student and staff’s expectations in an attempt to make them look again and encourage them to use public transport.

Adding an element of fun whilst waiting for a bus, some seats of the shelter take the form of a swing, while a live electronic information board ensures that all users are kept up to date with arrival and departure times.

"The bus shelter was a collaborative project with ideas and feedback from bus users, including students and the Access and Areas Group, along with the creative input from our architects LSI,” said Dawn Dewar, UEA Transport Coordinator. “This has resulted in an attractive yet practical waiting area that will provide a blueprint for future waiting areas”.
