Typically, they have thin layers of substrate (the growing medium) to keep depth and weight to a minimum. Extensive green roofs are delivered for a variety of reasons, the most popular being for biodiversity and meeting a Biodiverse Action Plan (BAP).

In many instances an extensive green roof can be a planning requisite and the ideal solution is the simplest, lightweight
sedum blanket system. Other options are substrate-based systems that are
plug planted to the client's requirement or seeded for natural colonisation.
