Smarter Working for Bauder Saves Critically Threatened Tropical Forest

Carbon management is good for the planet and for business and in 2012 Bauder saved 3,484Kgs of carbon dioxide by using Carbon Balanced Paper to print its client brochures.  By working with the World Land Trust (WLT) an international conservation charity, and Colchester Print Group, Bauder has also preserved in perpetuity 293m² of critically threatened tropical forest at WLT Carbon Balanced Paper project sites.

The World Land Trust is dedicated to saving threatened habitats and their biodiversity. Sir David Attenborough OM, CH, FRS is among its Patrons, and its integrity and credibility provide peace of mind. Through land purchase of ecologically important standing forests under threat of clearance, carbon is locked that would otherwise be released. These protected forests are then able to continue absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Referred to as REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), this is now recognised as one the most cost-effective and swiftest ways to arrest the rise in atmospheric CO2 and global warming effects.

Paul Felgate, environmental manager at Bauder said ‘As a company, we continue to drive our environmental policy forward by assessing the environmental impact of our operations and to commit to using recycled materials or those with low environmental impact. As a result of this focus, our company brochures and magazines are printed not only on carbon Balanced Paper but also use vegetable based inks on alcohol free presses, and the print company is ISO 14001 and FSC accredited.’

It is important to have a carbon reduction strategy for today’s business operations; hopefully in the future this will become standard practice.
