JCB World Headquarters
Bauder Total Roof System (BTRS) with BauderSOLAR
Synopsis
JCB’s World HQ in Rocester recently completed a major project to improve the integrity of its main office roof, and took the opportunity to reduce the company’s overall environmental impact through the addition of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system at the same time

The specification
Working closely with the client, Bauder developed a bespoke specification package that was designed to maximise the solar output from the available roof space and satisfy all relevant planning conditions. The office roof was waterproofed with over 7,500m2 of Bauder’s premium reinforced bitumen system, BTRS, by approved installer NRA Roofing & Flooring, before having 643 PV modules fitted by CJ Solar; enabling the client to generate at least 160 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year.
Products applied
Bauder Total Roof System (BTRS)
Fully integrated bituminous roof system, incorporating
modified bitumen membranes and high-performance insulation.
BauderSOLAR
An integrated system in which the solar PV module and the substructure are combined to form a single unit, which is secured to the roof without any penetration of the waterproofing or roof deck.
The result
The PV system included an integrated power optimiser that allows web-based monitoring of the individual modules and increases output by up to 25%. All roofing works were completed on time and to budget much to the delight of the client who had set strict deadlines in order to meet Feed-in Tariff requirements.
System installed
Bauder Total Roof System (BTRS)
1 Bauder K5K |
A heavy duty, torch-applied SBS elastomeric bitumen capping sheet, featuring a spunbond polyester reinforcement to allow the finished product to cope with structural movement without fracture. The mineral finish provides protection against UV degradation. |
2 BauderTEC KSA DUO 35 |
A technically advanced self-adhesive SBS elastomeric bitumen underlayer with “DUO” lap technology to ensure thorough sealing of lap joints, even in lower temperatures. |
3 BauderPIR FA-TE |
An efficient PIR insulation board with aluminium foil facing on both sides. The top facing features a printed grid pattern to aid site cutting. It is lightweight and has zero ozone depletion potential. |
4 BauderTEC KSD FBS |
A self-adhesive SBS elastomeric bitumen air & vapour control layer, with a mica finish. |
BauderSOLAR PV System
A single source solution for integrated design of waterproofing and PV. This lightweight system involves a risk-free, zero penetration installation, and weighs just 9-12.5kg/sqm. The panels are designed to create a 12º angle for optimum output.
643 BauderSOLAR PV modules were fitted on this project, achieving aproximately 199.33kWp.
Advocacy
Jo Scott, Group Energy and Environment Adviser of JCB:
"Including renewables in our building portfolio has been an aspiration for JCB for some time, the objective being to use renewable energy to help us achieve our carbon reduction goals. Having the waterproofing replaced on our office roof presented us with the perfect opportunity to realise this long term goal. A fundamental consideration for us was having a PV system that was both lightweight and non-penetrative and Bauder’s solution delivered just that.
Working with Bauder also meant we could have a single source supply and all-inclusive guarantee, giving us complete confidence to invest in both the new roofing system and our first UK roof-mounted solar scheme. This project involved a lot of firsts for us but the whole process went very smoothly thanks to the support of the entire roofing team, and their commitment to working closely with our Site Services team. We have been delighted with the performance of the roofing system."
Daniel Fletcher, Director of NRA Roofing and Flooring:
"Our team worked in close partnership with both the client and Bauder to agree working hours and delivery times, as the products needed to be craned onto the office roof which remained operational throughout. Bauder also provided us with all the relevant design information and enlisted the help of electrical installer CJ Solar to fit the PV modules while we focused purely on the waterproofing. This expert support was crucial on a large scale project like this, with there being fairly tight deadlines in place and because it was the first ever PV installation we had been involved in."
