Tintern Abbey Gift Shop
Bauder Total Roof System (BTRS) bituminous soloution with Bauder solar PV system
Synopsis
Situated in the picturesque village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, the Cistercian abbey is one of the most historic monastic ruins in Wales. In 2013 work started at the abbey to replace the roof of the gift shop, which had exceeded its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the failing roof, but to bring the abbey to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) system.

The specification
Given the project requirements, Bauder's innovative solar PV solution was a natural choice. This unique system allows for web-based monitoring of the individual PV modules, identifying any irregularities and increasing output by up to 25 percent. This is particularly beneficial on partially shaded roof areas, like the one at Tintern where nearby trees cast a shadow over the PV area but cannot be removed due to preservation regulations.
Roof areas totalling 630m² were fitted with 57 PV Modules, enabling the abbey to generate at least 14.05 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year. The simplicity of the installation also meant that the entire array could be fitted in just one day to the client’s exact specifications. Since the installation the abbey has been recognised by many award-giving bodies for its sustainability, most notably winning the solar category at the NFRC’s 2014 Roofing Awards.
Products applied
Bauder Total Roof System
A heavy duty, robust and extremely tough bituminous system.
BauderSOLAR
Integrated system where photovoltaic modules and the substructure are combined to form a single unit, which is secured to the roof without any penetration of the waterproofing or roof dec.
The result
Since the installation the abbey has been recognised by many award-giving bodies for its sustainability, most notably winning the solar category at the NFRC’s 2014 Roofing Awards.
