Lightweight Low Maintenance Extensive Green Roofs
Extensive green roofs are constructed using shallow depths of growing mediums, known as substrates. A substrate-based green roof will often incorporate a mixed vegetation scheme of low maintenance plants chosen to suit the project and location.
A traditional extensive substrate green roof system provides a depth of a growing medium, usually around 80-200mm to allow for the specification of a broader range of species and planting schemes. The depth of substrate helps the sedums, wildflowers, grasses, or herbs develop a strong root network making them tolerant to wind, frost, and drought.
This type of green roof system is primarily specified for their ecological benefits or aesthetic appearance rather than for general access or leisure purposes.
