Rooflights can form part of an effective technical lighting scheme, particularly in conjunction with efficiently controlled artificial lighting, to produce specified illumination levels. Horizontal rooflights can provide significantly more light than vertical windows, an approach that can also save energy and reduce the carbon footprint of a building.

FAQ's

1. Are we able to specify AOV’s (smoke vents)

Modular AOV’s (smoke vents) are part of our standard range of rooflights.  However, as they form part of a wider Building Management System we do not provide any control panels as part of our offer, simply the wires to enable connection by others.
 
2. What Access hatches do we offer?

Access hatches can be based on the BauderDOME or Euroglaze design.  Minimum size is 750 x 750mm, anything less will be too small to allow access through the hole!
 
3. Where do I find General information about rooflights and the various Bauder kerb and foot types?

There is a Rooflight Manual available.  It contains information regarding kerb and foot types, ventilation options, Building Regulations etc. This is our main reference document.

6. What is the impact resistance of Bauder rooflight glazing?

Polycarbonate
There are two tests for soft body impact:
 
EN 1873:2014
This is the test that BBA use, with results published in BBA certificates.
A spheroconical bag weighing 50Kg is dropped onto a rooflight and upstand from various heights.  The heights and ratings achieved are:
0.6m for rating SB300
1.2m for rating SB600
1.6m for rating SB800
2.4m for rating SB1200
Soft body impact rating of a 600 x 600mm domed, opening frame, triple skin Euroglaze is SB1200
 
ACR[M]001:2014
This is the test that most specifiers refer to.
A 300mm diameter bag weighing 45KG is dropped onto the rooflight glazing twice from a height of 1200mm.
The results are classified as follows:
Fragile - The first sandbag dropped falls through the glazing medium.
Class C – the initial dropped sandbag is retained, however the second falls through to the floor.
Class B – the sandbag is retained on both impact tests, however damage is sustained to the polycarbonate (surfaces scratches etc)
Class A – no visible damage whatsoever after both impacts.
Polycarbonate rooflights generally achieve class B
 
7. What is the fire performance of Bauder rooflights?

There is no straightforward single answer to this question.  For Euroglaze rooflights refer to section 11 of the BBA certificates.
Building Regulations require rooflights forming part of an escape route to have a minimum 30 minute fire rating.
Common examples of escape routes:
Stairwells of multi-storey buildings
School corridors
Designated routes across roof areas
This will require a Bauder Rooflight with special glass glazing, it will not be achieved by standard Bauder Rooflights.

8. What is the thermal performance of Bauder rooflights?
This varies depending on kerb type and rooflight size.  Some examples are listed in section 7 of the BBA certificates, and there is a calculation method for other sizes.
However, it is recommended to contact Bauder to obtain U values for specific rooflights.
Minimum requirements for Building Regulations are stated in the Rooflight Technical Manual.

 
9. What ventilation is possible in Bauder rooflights?

Ventilation options are “hit & miss”, Rota vent, hinged opening or mechanical extraction.  Charts showing ventilation possibilities of Euroglaze and BauderDOME are given in the Rooflight Technical Manual.
Automatic opening vents complete with 7-day rain sensors can be provided.
Opening rooflights
Maximum reach of mechanism: Glass – 200mm, polycarbonate – 300mm
Mechanical ventilation is possible in glazed and solid access hatches and would be located in the upstand.  This would be classed as a Special Modular Rooflight.
 
10. What is the maximum slope that a Bauder Modular rooflight can be installed on?

17.5° Other types of rooflight / glazing can be designed to fit any slope.
